Background
During the IAHR Groundwater Section meeting that was organized within the activities of the 4th International Groundwater Symposium which was held in Valencia, Spain between 22 and 24 of September 2010, the Director of Water Resources Division of Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) has presented a proposal to organize the 5th International Groundwater Symposium in Kuwait. The proposal was strongly supported and approved by the top management of KISR since 2010. Based on KISR's proposal, desire and capabilities, the members of International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) have selected KISR to organize the 5th International Groundwater Symposium.
The Fifth International Groundwater Symposium will be organized jointly by IAHR Groundwater Hydraulics Committee and KISR and will be held in Kuwait between 19 and 21 of November, 2012.
Symposium Objectives

The purpose of the Symposium is to bring together researchers, scientists, engineers and managers to raise awareness about current challenges and opportunities for the exploration and sustainable development of groundwater resources using cuttingedge technology. The Symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and expertise among the various research and applied groups, for better understanding of the complex processes that lead to best practices in groundwater utilization and management. The interactions among the multidisciplinary participants of the Symposium will also serve to recognize the limitations of existing approaches and help identify future research avenues.
From a nation of pearl divers and spice merchants to one of the worlds' largest oil exporters, Kuwait has undergone many exciting transformations. Kuwaiti society is truly cosmopolitan and modern and yet it remains true to its heritage and traditions.
Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR)
IAHR, founded in 1935, is a worldwide independent organisation of engineers and water specialists working in fields related to the hydro-environmental sciences and their practical application. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through to ice engineering, hydroinformatics and continuing education and training. IAHR stimulates and promotes both research and it's application, and by so doing strives to contribute to sustainable development, the optimisation of world water resources management and industrial flow processes.
